Polar bears are slowly becoming endangered. Are we doing enough to help? According to the World Wildlife Foundation, the species is listed as vulnerable currently, however due to the continual loss of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean the conservation status is likely to move towards endangerment. Polar bears use the sea ice to travel, hunt, sleep and mate. However, because of the melting of the ice caps, the bears are spending more time on land. Another reason for the decline is the use of the Arctic for commercial activity which can cause further risk to the polar bear’s habitat.

So what you can do to help? Firstly, cut down on carbon emissions. The less carbon emissions used, then the less risk of ice caps melting. Other solutions would be stricter restrictions on commercial Arctic activity (taxing, limits per year), and donating and supporting polar bear conservation organizations such as Polar Bears International.
